Following up on my last post…

NEWS FLASH! Dick Vitale speaks well of the Illini (finally!).

I don’t think it’s any secret that the best team has been the Fighting Illini. There is no doubt that Illinois has had a fantastic start, and the fans in Champaign should be jumping with joy.

Coach Bruce Weber’s team has a dynamite backcourt, Deron Williams and Dee Brown. When you play that efficiently on the perimeter, you always have a chance to win. Just look at how good Wake Forest is, but the Illini won a mismatch, a no-contest 91-73 victory over the then-No. 1 Demon Deacons on Dec. 1.

Illinois also dominated Cincinnati 67-45 on a neutral court in Las Vegas. Those wins say a lot about the Flyin’ Illini. That’s right, I remember when the Flyin’ Illini reached the Final Four in 1989. Coach Lou Henson was on the sidelines. This year’s Illini also have the potential for special things.

Coach of the Midseason — Bruce Weber, Illinois
A Big Ten lifer and a Midwesterner at heart, Weber has done an outstanding job getting his team to blend into a unit. The Illini have played sensational basketball.

Man…if Dickie V keeps talking nice, I may have to reassess my world-view. :)

Oh wait…he still has Kansas as #1 (Illinois #2) in his Sensational 16. Bad Dickie V…no soup for you!

Came across an interesting article over at Yahoo News this morning about my alma mater’s basketball team (the University of Illinois Fighting Illini). Since Yahoo doesn’t keep news articles for very long, I’ll pull out a few of the better blurbs.

As the top-ranked Illini head to Northwestern today looking for a school-record 18th straight victory to start the season, it’s clear they’re receiving ample appreciation for their play.

(The “Sports Illustrated” article noted how Weber’s “undefeated Illini have been in March form since early December).

Yet Weber senses a burgeoning movement against his Illini – as if the college basketball world can’t wait for their first loss to occur.

“I just think it’s a little bit a lack of respect for the Big Ten,” Weber said. “Because they (ESPN) have all said the Big Ten’s no good, even though we are (No.) 2 or 3 in the RPI as a league. They want something to back up their statement, a ‘We told you so.’”

What’s his evidence?

Though he didn’t cite it specifically, Weber must have noticed four Associated Press voters defecting from the Illinois camp this week and spreading their first-place votes between Kansas and North Carolina.

And remember those seven ESPN.com “experts?” Only one of them picked Illinois to win it all. Two of them didn’t even include the Illini in their projected Final Four

Granted, predictions are a very inexact science as those who read Gregg Easterbrook’s Tuesday Morning Quarterback column over at nfl.com are well aware of, so I won’t fault ESPN too much for that. However, if Illinois were in the ACC, we’d be hearing more about their near-invincibility, and their prainses would be widely sung from the halls of SportsCenter.

I wrote Dick Vitale off as a lost cause a long time ago. If the team’s not in the ACC, and their coach’s name doesn’t rhyme with “so shiv me,” he’s useless. Aside from a comment he made after Illinois knocked off Wake Forest, the #1 team in the nation hasn’t merited headline mention by him, last time I checked espn.com.

And, someone on ESPN’s research team needs a good talking to:

Oh, one final indignity? During Tuesday’s Ohio State-Wisconsin game, ESPN threw up a graphic of the nation’s five best second-year coaches.

North Carolina’s Roy Williams made the list. So did Kansas’ Bill Self.

Weber? Not so fast.

After Bill Self dumped Illinois two years ago (just as we were on the verge of greatness), I’d love nothing more than to see him get squashed like a bug by Illinois. I don’t want the Illini to just win. I want to see Self have to walk off the floor in St. Louis, or whereever we end up meeting like a puppy with his tail between his legs because the guys he recruited stuck with Illinois, played their guts out, and showed why they’re #1.

The much-anticipated pictures from Australia are now online in my photo gallery. I’ve got about 100 of the best shots we took from the trip (yes, Marcie took a couple of the shots, even!) up for your perusal. Here’s my favorite:

Yes, I know, it’s been a while since I posted here. It’s been a combination of things:

  • I had some problems with WordPress (the software that runs this blog) that kept me from logging in to make new posts. That’s all fixed now, though.
  • Work’s been pretty busy as of late.
  • We’ve been getting a lot done around the house. We just painted the master bedroom this week.
  • Marcie and I got married! See the pictures over at my photo gallery. Credit for these photos goes to several of our wedding guests, most particularly Marcie’s aunt Julie. If you’ve got some, send me an e-mail at ben (at) ben-johnson.org and I’ll put them up!
  • Planning the honeymoon. We’ll be in Australia for 2 weeks. Lots of pictures to come after that!

So, that’s what’s been new lately. Once we’re back from the honeymoon I’ll start posting a little more…really, I promise!

Slacker…

Once again, I’ve been slacking in keeping this thing updated. Fortunately, I’ve got a little time on my hands tonight after getting “Happy Birthday” wishes from everyone. (what, you didn’t know! shame on you!). My photo galleries got corrupted, so I updated them, and I added in a feature that loads a random image from my gallery to the blog. Just a little way to show off my work a little bit, but feel free to poke around in there a little bit. Hopefully, I’ll get some shots in Australia this fall that’ll knock everyone’s socks off.

I’m out in Idaho this week at one of our other plants, working on yet another process improvment project. Pretty area of the country…it’d be nice to spend a little more time out here and sightsee. But, I’m heading back down to Salt Lake Thursday afternoon to catch my flight back to Chicago Friday morning…and back to my sweetie ;)

…and I’ve been working like a dog. Well…maybe not quite that bad, but I’ve joked that owning a house has made it seem like I’ve got a 2nd full-time job going on now. Put in my 8-9 hours at Kraft, then I come home, unpack boxes, assemble bookcases, fix little things, yard work, etc.

But, it’s nice to have a place we can call ours. It just feels good to have a sense of ownership over things.

I’ve been a bit of a slacker online and in real-life as a result. I’m a little behind on e-mailing folks, catching up on the phone, etc. I feel kinda bad about it. I’m traveling a lot the next two weeks though, so I’ll have no house-related diversions and I can catch up with everyone a little bit more. My apologies in advance for being a slacker, all…

Weather around the Chicago area’s been a bit freakish as of late. We set a record low at night last night, and daytime temperatures have been hard-pressed to break 60F. Here it’s 12 August, and I haven’t had to run the air conditioning yet this month. Makes me wonder what kind of fall/winter we’re going to be in for…

Friday afternoon in the office…I’m sitting in a meeting that I really have little interest in, so I’m messing around on the iPaq. Maybe it’s the Sudafed I’m on right now, but I’m just mentally not in the right place for identifying the next generation of pilot plant equipment.

Or, maybe I’m just not in the mood for Dilbert-ish meetings after the decidedly non-Dilbert plant environment. Oh well…I’m heading home for the weekend after this meeting to see the family and stop in at a shower Marcie’s relatives are throwing.

Whoosh…

Hello from Albany airport. I’m waiting for the flight to board…we’ve been delayed due to horrible weather in the midwest. Apparently they had 90mph winds in Detroit. Fortunately my connection was delayed too. This is one case where I’m not going to be worrying about standing in line to talk with an agent. I can just hit mobile.nwa.com and make sure my connection to St. Louis. Wireless Internet is a good thing.

Road trip…

So, I had a training course down at Kraft’s facility in East Hanover, NJ. Since I live in the sticks, that meant a little road trip. The drive from northern NY down to the greater NYC area is pretty scenic. Coming south from Albany, you’re following the Catskills and skirting the Hudson River valley. Unfortunately, I think I was about a week or two early to see much greenery, but it’s definitely one of the nicer business-related drives I’ve been on.

And, I’ll be doing it again in June, but continuing on into NYC, since Marcie and I will be spending a weekend there.

The only thing I didn’t like about New Jersey is the way they do their major non-interstate roads. Say I’m driving on NJ-10, and I see a store I want to stop in at on the other side of the road. I have to drive past it, find the next place to make a U-turn (which could involve me going through the exact same traffic signal twice depending on how the intersection is setup), then turn into the store. Then, to continue on down the road in the same direction I was going, I have to exit the lot and do another U-turn.

Really, who’s the genius that engineered that? If there are U-turn locations in abundance, it can be workable, but I had to do a nearly 1-mile backtrack out of my hotel lot at one point. At least NJ gasoline is cheaper.

The amount of traffic and comments I’ve gotten on my article on installing an iPod in my 2001 Honda Civic has been really good, so I figured I’d recap some of the good ideas and comments for everyone’s benefit.

1) Since I wrote that article, SIK has come out with a product called the IMP, which, like the Belkin charger provides a line-out and a port for charging through the cigarette lighter. (click here for manufacturer’s site) I like the idea of this as it means you’re going through one less amplifier (the Belkin has an amp in it). I haven’t cracked one open to see what type of amplifier chip they’re using, but I imagine a $40 unit isn’t going to have a high-end one. This device would also be handy for iPod users who want to run through a headphone amplifier to drive audiophile-type headphones (ie, Sennheiser HD-600, etc.). I’ll probably be buying one for that purpose…

2) A few people have written in to indicate that they can reach up and make the connection into the back of their head unit without removing the stereo from the dashboard. I guess I have big hands or something, but if you can do it this way, more power to you.

3) Ground loops – a few weeks after I wrote the original article, Logjam indicated that for some applications, one of the wires on their adaptor needed to be grounded. If you’re running from battery power, you should do this. If you’re running from the SiK or the Belkin, you shouldn’t need to. Some folks reported that they could hear some buzzing noises with the stereo turned up real high. If I go to 8 dots on the volume, sure, I’ll have it…but normal listening volume for me is around 3….maybe 4.

4) Newer model Civics have a different lower center console, which I’m not sure how to go about removing. The best advice I can give is to tug at various parts a little to see if they’re held with friction clips, or look for screwhole covers. Also, Google is your friend. The radio/climate control panel is the same, so presumably the mounting bolts are in the same location below, if you’re looking to pop that part out like I did.

Ok, so it’s been a couple weeks since I’ve put anything really substantial on here. I know, I’m a slacker. I’ve been coming in at 3-4am the past couple days for a couple plant trials, so I’m taking advantage of a little quiet time to catch up on things.

So, what have I been doing? Well, a fair amount of PGA Tour 2004. :) Like I quoted Jake previously, it is like video crack. I beat Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach. I shot an 18-under par round from the black tees. I’ve had 5 aces.

As far as real stuff, I’ve rounded up a couple groomsmen for the wedding, started building my new headphone amp, and I took a trip down to see Marcie…we went to Nashville for the weekend – ended up driving to Lynchburg to check out the Jack Daniel’s distillery. It’s kind of funny to have one of the most well-known brands of whiskey made in a dry county. The distillery is really a pretty interesting operation…the pace of things is a lot different from Kraft, for sure. I picked up a bottle of the Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel (their answer to a single-malt Scotch). Maybe I’ll crack that open tonight and sample it. It’s aged another year or two beyond regular Jack, so it’ll be interesting to see how much better it gets.

Also, we saw LOTR: Return of the King on an IMAX screen in Nashville. It was good to see the movie again, but I was expecting a little more bang out of it…it looked like they just took the exact same 35mm print and ran it on the giant screen. The picture certainly could’ve been sharper, but overall, still fun to see. Marcie actually stayed awake the whole time, after taking 2 or three tries to get through The Two Towers. :)

“Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 is like video crack.” –Jake
“If I’m not at the office tomorrow, come over and pry the controller out of my hands” –Me

This is a seriously addictive game, people. If you have free time in your schedule, block it all off now…you’ll be playing the game. Last night when I got home from work, I played the game, then I talked to Marcie. That’s it.

I did have a few “I am Tiger Woods”-worthy moments: dropping a double-breaking eagle putt from 128 feet, and dropping a 125-yard chip shot into the cup like MJ knocking down a 3-pointer.

Happy 2004

Mischief managed!

It’s kind of ironic because if you have Google translate his site from German to English, the “service” he sells is techniques for getting your site ranked highly in Google. Maybe fate will be kind and this article will show up high in Google’s index for people looking for his site. ;)

What’s the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? “African or European,” you ask? The question has been answered.

No…not that New York. I’m in northern New York for the next 8 months. More specifically, a little town called Lowville. Now I have a bigger apartment (paid for!)…but I’m also twice as far from Marcie :(

The series over at ESPN’s Page 2 on a Cubs-Red Sox World Series continues…good for a laugh or three.

Speaking of Page 2, I’m kinda PO’ed that they ditched the Tuesday Morning Quarterback column by Gregg Easterbrook after he made a comment that might be interpreted as anti-Semitic over at his blog on The New Republic. While I don’t condone what he said (and he did later apologize), the fact that ESPN wiped all record of him from their site (archives and all) for a comment he made somewhere else seems to be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. At least when ESPN canned Rush Limbaugh, it was for something he did on their show…he sticks his foot in his mouth daily on his own radio show. From hitting a few other blogs though, it sounds like half the reason he was canned was that he trashed Michael Eisner (the head guy at Disney, who owns ESPN)…and Eisner is very thin-skinned.

Fortunately, the colums still exists in Google’s all-seeing, all-knowing caches. Search for “Tuesday Morning Quarterback” and hit the “Cached” link for a particular page, and it should load up.

Hopefully, TMQ will pop up on another site…

What if the Cubs and Red Sox actually won their respective League Championship Series? ESPN’s Page 2 has the answer.
